On March 4, 1990, I was born in Freehold, New Jersey; which happens to be the same town Bruce Springsteen is from. I was the first of three little angels my parents Roger and Jennifer Surly are blessed to have. My mom happens to be the only woman in our family other than Sandi the beagle. During high school I competed in both track and cross country. One year our team actually made it to Nike Team Nationals, which is an all expenses paid trip to Oregon, where the top twenty two teams in the nation compete. Our team won the state cross country meets seven consecutive times, with two indoor state track championships, and one Triple Crown the year we won outdoor track. My passion for running and the outdoors lead me to Western State College in Colorado, where I competed in Cross Country and track. Although I love running, when it is -20 degrees outside a 14 mile run does not sound so appealing. However, going snowboarding with all 2,000 other students always sounds fun. After a year of immersing myself into the Colorado lifestyle, being a collegiate athlete, switching my major around a few times, and almost convincing myself snowboarding is all that matters, the mass amount of confusion one can only imagine I was feeling brought me back here to Northwest Arkansas. Originally first semester last year I wanted to be a doctor until chemistry kicked my butt, then I thought back to how much I loved teaching kids at Camp War Eagle how to perform water sports. As a counselor we get to coach different age groups in sports. I also happened to meet an amazing girl who teaches in Prairie Grove. Basically, all these experiences from the summer, combined with my passion for running have led me into the physical education profession.
